Above: Me as the Countess, Below: John Quilty and me before we went on.  John was “Crawley” the Manservant

I wrote a skit for 11th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition

Gypsy of the Year is one of the big benefits that Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS organizes.

It follows one of their two annual campaigns and is sponsored by Target and Continental Airlines.  This year was at the Marquis Theater

Even though it is tacky to talk about charity gigs, this one was a total hoot and I am very proud of the results.

Marnee May, our co producer for the Countess decided that I was going to go on as “the Countess” in this competition and that John Quilty would appear as “Crawley” from beneath my dress.

From that premise I wrote a script, made the dress and John’s pants, sewing all by hand and got the Pianist “Rachel Kaufman to accompany us and  my friend Gary Lyons to direct us.

Monday was a little tense, but Tuesday’s show was a lot of fun and we followed Dame Edna who was introducing the Judges.

The piece began with a poem about the play, then Crawley came out and we bitched about understudying. The end of the skit, we ripped off our clothes to naked boys singing.  We had some problems with an early version, because they didn’t want us to use the word “Cunt” (from “The Vagina Monologues) because of the sponsors Target being so squeaky clean.  So I re-wrote it.  Gary was a great help too and I was very grateful to be involved and find out that I could make a frock and style a wig.
