I had a phobia about Godspell, after I did an audition for a Cameron Mackintosh tour and he told me that I was “not right for Godspell”.  I went to audition for Roger Haines, who was doing the production in Leicester and he did not agree with Cameron.  It was a great production, in which I took over the choreography.  I sang “We Beseach Thee”.

I did two productions of Godspell.  One in Leicester, directed by Roger Haines and a National Tour, which was the last production directed by John Michael Tabelek (The Author) before he died.

This production was directed by John Michael Tabalek and became a national tour.  I guess JMT also thought that I was right for Godspell.  I understudied Jesus and also assisted Mr. Tabalek as dance captain.  He help to create a space where one could explore the simplicity of the piece and characters.  He said that he wanted to use clowns as they were the most direct and childlike story tellers.  He also said that his original concept was to number the roles 1-10 and having the actors pick a number before each performance, to see which role they would play.

Above was a dress rehearsal.  My costume was being altered.

To the right was a still from the show.  This production was non stop.  I remember collapsing after each curtain call.

Some shows are more fun to play than to watch. Godspell is sometimes one of those shows.  As an audience member you either love it or hate it.
