Hairspray (Broadway) Revisited

What is not to love about this show.  This is the third time I have seen it.  I sat in the last row of the mezzanine and was still moved and transported.  It has heart and energy and I was happy to see Steven DeRossa (from my Irma Vep days) giving a great performance as the father.  This show fills me with hope that there are writers out there who can change the world in some way.

Doubt (Broadway)

A perfect play, about nothing, saying little and taking ones breath away due to stunning performances.  I returned  to see Eileen Atkins play the same role that I had previously seen Cherry Jones portray.  Ms Atkins is a favorite actress of mine and it was great to see an entirely different, but valid take on this character.  It is hard as I cannot fault or say that I preferred either performance.  Ms Jones kept you on the edge of your seat with her strength and power, Ms Atkins took you on a roller coaster ride of laughter and horror.

Broadway:

Spider Man

Very sad.  Nothing came together, no focus and no thrill.  Throwing actors about on highly visible wires and throwing every kind of cliché experimental theatre trick together with some tune less music and a really bad book is just a rip off.  Everyone was waiting for something to happen, like a stage hand being struck or an actor falling from the sky.  Obviously all the hype about the director is just that.  I have seen more moving amateur productions.  Apparently they are re writing it before it opens about 10 months after previews began.

More Recent (Atlanta):

Bring it on (Alliance)

Very cool show.  Much better book than the  movie.  Greta fun and frolics.  It all works together to give a great entertainment.

Come Fly With Me (Alliance)

More than time to get Frank Sinatra off the shelf.  Interesting how the US likes to call dance pieces “theater”.  There were two performances that were stunning and the idea was interesting.  It worked theatrically on most levels too, but it was not a musical.

Mary Poppins (Fox, National Tour)
Yep, I was surprised how well it was performed and the effects were great.  What can I say, it is Disney.  If they cant give you your moneys worth, then who can?  No more, no less.

Spiderman Broadway

Eternally in previews, this show was a mess, concepts that meant nothing, bad dialogue, dubious music and terrified performances.  What were they thinking.  People only asked me to tell them if someone died and that was about all anyone could hope for to make this memorable in any way.

Prairie Home Companion (NPR, Live at the Fox)

Since moving South, I have become a fan of this radio show.  It was fun to be at a live taping.

Everyone has an opinion and it costs so much to go out I do not mind sharing mine.  Keep looking for updates.
